It gives your footage an organic, surreal quality. Great for dream sequences or the point of view of an alien or animal. It also focuses attention on the center of the frame.
A bad lens bends light of different frequencies differently, forcing red and blue wavelengths of light to focus at different distances behind it. This is called chromatic aberration and shows up as color shifting out of register toward the edges.
When a lens won't bend light at the edges to the same focal point as the center it's called spherical aberration. This manifests itself as blurriness toward the edges.
The Cheap Lens plugin simulates a defective lens by creating both spherical and chromatic aberration.
This plugin has sliders that are capable of negative values...very helpul if you're trying to correct an image you shot with a bad lens.
